ah yes, the grease patty. the bees eat the sugar that is mixed in with the veg shortening, and as they do that, the veg shortening gets on their bodies, which impairs the ability of tracheal mites to hurt the bee. the bees don’t eat the shortening, but good question.

This is an awesome video, I’m a beginner this year and your videos help me. I was wondering about the fondant, I’ve been told that there is high fructose corn syrup in it and was told its not good for bees. Whats your take on that? Most people I know are using candy boards. I need to learn whats best before next winter. Thanks

you don’t. bees cluster in the hive in winter, and eat their food stores to generate warmth. you wrap the hive in tar paper or insulating wrap to help insulate the hive, and a few other things, but that’s about it.

fondant does not have fat in it, its a form of sugar. i’m going to try to make some myself this weekend.

and the pups are running around in the background of this video, they don’t get too close to the bees.
