How does a bee make a hive?

My husband found a beehive and our daughter is taking it to school for show and tell. The inside is amazing- you can see the honeycombs and we were just wondering how a bee can make such an intricate home.

    Bees in certain conditions excrete wax They chew this up making it moldable and create a hive from it.
    Also the hexagons are aligned so well because bees can sence the magnetic field of earth
