I mean, by age 16, we should all know how to spell, right? But if we had a spelling bee between an 18 year old and a 30 year old I would place my bet on the older person. And spelling has NOTHING to do with experience.
People who aren’t exposed to words very often don’t remember how to spell. So people who read and write very often, or are more educated, generally know how to spell better.
But some people just have poor memories, and spell things incorrectly inconsistently.
Many people don’t learn very well in public schools, and by age 16 can barely read. My friend teaches college freshman English, and he is always complaining about the students he finds can barely read English much less pass his class.
I TOTALLY agree with that! And you know what? I think a big part of the younger people’s inability to spell correctly has to do with the “internet age” since IM speak and abbreviations and such are acceptable. Therefore, why bother to learn the “long way” of spelling things?
Also, I think younger people don’t care how they sound or write because having a good vocabulary isn’t instilled in kids today like it was for me. I’m 31, by the way.
I work for a Fortune 25 company and I can tell you that grammar and spelling, even at the highest levels, can be poor.
As a programmer, I sometimes get involved in mass email distributions to the employees and am always finding errors, even in documents from HR where you’d think things like that would be scrutinized 10x more than anything else.
I think the younger people are a little more savvy when it comes to using the spell checker, but the older folks are starting to catch up. A lot of times, even myself, have found that if I’m in a big hurry, spelling takes a backseat to the message content. Just get it out and get it done!
Usually, yes. Older people are not as lazy, or in as big a hurry in general as younger people. Also, I think that they think typing that way makes them look cool. However, I’m only 21, and I think my grammar and spelling skills are respectable.
I’d bet with you- mostly because of the deterioration in quality in public schools- it seems that today as long as you “feel good” about yourself, being able to communicate effectively and function in the “real” world are at best secondary and more likely tertiary considerations- and by the way, I am submitting this answer completely as I typed it, without submitting it for spell check.
yes, except me

Oh, it does to. Only that an older person usually has a larger vocabulary than a younger person…especially with today’s youth.
