Richard, Nick, Jeremy and Grace transport bee frames from the suburbs of Merstham, Surrey to Holmbury St Mary, high up in the Surrey hills, ready for the spring and summer. It is also a chance to count the number of colonies in the hives, wearing beekeepers’ veils. Only six of the hives are colonised so far this year. The Latin quotation is “ingentis animos angusto in pectore verant” – Great hearts beat in tiny chests. Note these hives are painted with bee-friendly preservative, not paint …

Beautiful day, beautiful place, beautiful creatures.
