Are bees drunk or not?

When bees go a bit mental in Autumn (that’s “fall” for you Americans) it’s because they’re drunk from the rotting, therefore fermenting, flowers and not because they know they are going to die. Is this true?

  2. They might bee drunk if they mix the honey with alcohol.

  5. Bees and wasps can become drunk off of fermenting flower nectar and even more so from fallen fruit that is turning to alcohol, but those are usually just temporary conditions.

As wasp nests have been growing all summer, there are more and more workers and foragers available. The wasps that used to be the main foragers for the hive get demoted to guard duty. These wasps are old, and beginning to fall apart. They tend to be very cranky, and have little to lose, and so are much more aggressive and territorial than the guards were earlier in the season. With the back-up of a larger hive, it makes an encounter with a wasp nest much more dangerous late in the season.

So it’s not so much that they know they’re going to die, just that they’re old, cranky, starting to fall apart, and pissed off cuz they’ve been demoted. If they also happen to get drunk off fruit or rotten flowers, they might be mean drunks too.

  6. Honey bees are attracted to sweets, especially liquid sweets in the form of open cans of soft drinks. This is why they sometimes gather around eating areas at open air events, like fairs and carnivals, and crawl around on straws and can or bottle tops. While bees are generally not very aggressive while foraging for food or water, they can sting when disturbed, which makes them quite unwelcome at such events.

In addition to food, honey bees gather water for use in cooling the inside of the nest on hot days. They also use water to dilute the honey when they feed it to the larvae. Occasionally, honey bees collect the sticky resin and gum of trees and work into a substance called propolis

  7. It would be funny if they did but the effects of alcohol are due to the fat in nervous cells changing electrical conductivity due to the alcohol. I’m not quite sure how electrical impulses are affected in bees.
