To teens/ preteens: Do your parents talk to you about serious stuff?

like: sex (not the birds and the bees – stuff like “how do you know when you’re ready”, etc.), alcohol, drugs, date rape, cheating, bullying, teen suicide, violence and other subjects. How are they doing about helping you understand those issues? Do they initiate the conversations, wait for you to ask questions – or assume you’ve got it covered.
What would you like to be able to talk to them about but can’t? Why?

Is home schooling better than institutional schooling?

It’s been noted that many successful learners got their education from home (ex. spelling bee winners.) Public and even private schools have been heavily criticized for issues with under-achievement and violence. So, why did many of us go to an institution? Why don’t more people get home schooling? What do people gain from a big institution outside of the home?

Teens, Parents and The Sex Taboo?

Besides the ‘Birds and the Bees’ discussion, I’ve noticed that a lot of teens have a tendency not to discuss sex with their parents in any form. Why not? It’s clearly all over the media and internet, so society has no longer made it a serious ‘TABOO’ issue to talk about. And I’m not referring to the anatomy that so many teens learn about in school and health classes, I mean the stuff that the state cannot educate children on; like an orgasm, an arousal, what exactly sexual tension is, masturbation, the assorted forms it comes in, and some of the symptoms of STDs that educators may not go into fuller detail with. People say that education is the best weapon agains violence, death and disease, but why not sex? Why?

Thanks Nita, that helped a little bit, but still the question remains; WHY?
