It is often confusing how to perform an artificial swarm on a beehive and so I hope that this video helps people out. I know I needed a lot of help when trying to perform one! This is a clip on how to make increases in your stock of bees. It is part of beekeeping for beginners. It is a clip on swarm prevention. Nowadays we really need to prevent our bees from swarming, as the varroa mite has destroyed allot of the natural bee colony’s. The bees now rely on us to help them against these little mites, that are the carriers for certain viruses that our bees are not able to defend against.

One of my top bar hives throwing a swarm and then me catching it. This entire process took a little over an hour. My memory card filled up on the video camera so I couldn’t record the end, but I did get them moved and settled into a top bar hive.

This was a cast swarm (very small), so I decided to house it into a smaller bait hive. Later, this will make it easier to transport to an out apiary. In the meantime, it’s situated outside my kitchen door so I can keep an eye on their progress and feed if necessary. The hive isn’t as precariously placed as it appears, the roof has subsequently been weighted down so it can’t move.
