Is there anyone out there who has either gone to the National Spelling Bee as a participant? Or are their parents who have had children in the National Bee? My daughter went in 1998. How did you do and what were your experiences?

What is the oldest you can be to attend the National Scripps Spelling Bee? Noticed all the finalists were in 8th grade. Don’t remember anyone over about 13 or 14. Anyone know for sure?

Last night on the National Spelling Bee they did a feature piece on one of the last three or four kids. He said his favorite word was “the longest in the dictionary with 45 letters”. I think it started with “PN”? and know it had “volcano” at the end….do you know what it was? Can’t get it to google.
Thanks Pixie! That was the word!
..thanks Adrian for trying, honorary points for the Bard reference!

I mean, how do you enter, how do you prepare, how do you gain confidence, how do you find out about all these different origins and strange words, how do you win? My plan is to read/listen the entire Webster’s Third (or Fourth, if it comes out by then) New International Dictionary, Unabridged at five times a page and five times a word. Training through weekends (if nothing’s happening), breaks, summer, whatever it takes to to know the words. I also want to find out about all these etymologies and how the are words spelled (You know greek with AEs in them and Italian with SCs in them). So how do I do it?
