A Bees-Eye View Inside the Hive

Two weeks after installation in a Kenyan top bar hive, I lowered a video comera into the hive to get a better view of their progress. The ladies seem very content. As you can see they’re prolific comb builders! They are just starting work on their tenth top bar. Every time I check on them they are feverishly bringing in pollen and nectar. Stay tuned for future peeks at the inside of the hive…

My very first time handling honey bees. Installing a package of imported New Zealand honey bees into an observation hive. The hive is designed as a “class III safety cabinet” with ports for attaching sleeves. This allows manipulation of the removable top bars without releasing bees into my house. Held by pins on the outer lid, the top bars can be removed from the hive through a drawer bellow the false bottom. A boardman-type feeder and honey super are top-mounted & removable. The jewelery box foyer doubles as a pollen trap. For more video & photos, like my Facebook page “Barrel of Bees”!!!
