Honey Bees are not aggressive. Watch Sam Comfort handle these bees in a top bar hive bare armed with no protection and no smoke!

This colony of bees was a captured swarm that was placed in this new (empty) hive on 9 April 2011. By 25 April they had drawn 14 bars of near perfect comb, and had capped brood and honey stored throughout. On 2 May, it swarmed and what you see are bees from the remaining colony. Inside we observed several capped queen cells, capped brood, including areas of drone brood, and capped honey/sugar syrup. Incidentally, the swarm that left on 2 May was captured and placed in another hive.

Swarm transfer to top bar hive

This was a cast swarm (very small), so I decided to house it into a smaller bait hive. Later, this will make it easier to transport to an out apiary. In the meantime, it’s situated outside my kitchen door so I can keep an eye on their progress and feed if necessary. The hive isn’t as precariously placed as it appears, the roof has subsequently been weighted down so it can’t move.
